Hicks Street is one of the longest in Brooklyn Heights with some of its oldest buildings. Laid out by brothers John & Jacob Middagh Hicks, Number 57 here was built around 1826 for merchant James Howland. At the time of its construction, the home was two stories tall, with the vaguely Parisian mansard roof added later. Up until around the 1970s, there was actually a store on the ground level, a laundry shop based on the 1940s tax photos. By 1980 it had been converted back into residential space. Today the home is two duplex apartment units. It was landmarked as a part of the Brooklyn Heights Historic District on November 23rd, 1965.
